‘Kiln Fired’

Inspired by a Shigaraki-yaki pot I discovered in Ginza, Tokyo, with its gentle and subtle palette. In ceramics, glaze is allowed to flow naturally under gravity, with the final result revealed only after firing. This work captures that quiet beauty — layers emerging and colours blending organically, reflecting the wabi-sabi aesthetic of simplicity and imperfection.

‘Sumi Black’

Inspired by Kurogaki, a rare persimmon wood discovered during a trip to Tokyo. Known for its deep, ink-like black patterns hidden within the tree, it appears only rarely and cannot be identified until the wood is cut. To capture this quiet mystery of nature, I used Japanese soot paint, a material deeply connected to the cultural meaning of black in Japan.

Lanson Place Parliament Gardens, Melbourne

502 Albert St, East Melbourne VIC 3002 Australia

The project is located in a heritage building that served as the Salvation Army Print Factory in 1901, situated at the edge of the CBD in East Melbourne, just north of Parliament.

The extended part of the building features a modern contemporary design, which isn’t immediately visible from Albert Street, and the façade doesn’t resemble a typical hotel.

My artworks are displayed in the residential lounge and penthouse bedroom. The view from the penthouse is absolutely stunning.

The theme is “mark-making and materiality,” featuring over 400 curated artworks by talented artists throughout the hotel.
